Science, sunsets, and a new start in Darwin
Meet Rubia Stanway — a Science teacher at Casuarina Senior College in Darwin, and a proud graduate of Charles Darwin University’s Master of Teaching program.
Originally from Brazil, Rubia was ready for a change. “I moved to the Territory seeking a lifestyle change. Darwin offers the best sunsets, and the short commute to work makes everyday life more enjoyable and less rushed.”
Her first taste of Territory teaching came during her university practicum at Casuarina Senior College. It didn’t take long for her to know she’d found the right place. “I loved it from Day 1. The school’s structure and organisation, combined with the support and expertise of my colleagues, created an environment where I could thrive. But most of all, the students made the experience unforgettable, so I could not wait to return after graduating.”
Now in her first year as a qualified teacher, Rubia is teaching Stage 1 and 2 Biology, Stage 1 Nutrition, and Scientific Studies. The Territory’s diversity and strong sense of community have shaped her early career in the best way. “The diversity of students and the support from the school and colleagues have made it a very rewarding experience so far.”
Her journey has been as rich personally as it has professionally. “Since moving to Darwin, I became an Australian citizen, I graduated in the Master of Teaching, I got engaged at Litchfield National Park and married at the Darwin Botanic Garden and had my family visit from overseas. So much to celebrate!”
For teachers thinking about making the move, Rubia’s advice is simple: “To enjoy the lifestyle change, the slower pace and the uniqueness of the Top End. People here are friendly and there are plenty of opportunities for career growth.”
If you’re ready for a fresh start, breathtaking sunsets, and a truly rewarding teaching career — the Northern Territory could be your next chapter.
